Cream Cheese Coffee Cake


3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter or shortening
1/3 cup cream cheese or Neûfchatel cheese
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1-1/2 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1-1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375°.  Grease and flour a 9X9" square pan.  Mix sugar, shortening, cream cheese, and egg thoroughly.  Stir in milk.  Blend dry ingredients and stir into the sugar mixture.  Pour batter into prepared pan.

In a seperate bowl combine the brown sugar and cinnamon.  Sprinkle on top of batter.

Bake 25 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick stuck into the center comes out clean.  Serve warm.

This is a variation on a coffee cake my father often made while I was growing up.
